Real Madrid vs Monaco<10>
With Real Madrid currently going through a turbulent period, is the level of backing from the bookmakers really justified?
Looking back at Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign this season, the numbers are far from convincing. Across six group-stage matches, they managed to win by more than one goal margin only once — and that came against Almaty Kairat, a relatively weak side that barely qualified for the group stage. In the other fixtures, Madrid scraped narrow one-goal home wins over Marseille and Juventus, lost away to a struggling Liverpool side at the time, edged Olympiacos by a single goal on the road, and were beaten at home by Manchester City. Overall, the performances lack authority and dominance.
What’s even more telling is the market movement. Across three Champions League home games, bookmakers consistently reduced their support for Real Madrid, and all three ended up losing against the handicap. This gradual downgrade clearly reflected a collapse in market confidence. Yet for this match, the bookmakers have suddenly taken an unusually aggressive stance.

Monaco operate in the same Ligue 1 tier as Marseille and are comparable in overall strength. Against Marseille, Real Madrid were priced at -1.25 and only managed a one-goal win. But against Monaco, the line jumps straight to -1.75. The last time Madrid opened at -1.75 was on November 2 last year against Valencia — a relegation-level La Liga side. Has Monaco really fallen to that level? Obviously not. The -1.75 line feels inflated and irrational on the surface.
My read is straightforward: this could actually be a sign of genuine confidence from the bookmakers in a big Real Madrid win. By setting such a high line, they are deliberately creating resistance to deter public money. As the most globally followed club in football, Real Madrid are always a key risk-control target for bookmakers. Beyond objective factors, they need to manufacture additional barriers.
Therefore, I believe a convincing Real Madrid victory is very much on the cards.
Prediction: Real Madrid -1.5, Home Win
